Figrues stand or sit in a narrow passgeway that leads back in space to a dark entrance, beyond which a brightly lit arched entry is visible. The flanking buildings that form the passageway are not described; the focus is on the scattering of figures and the entryway in the distance.

A horizontal view of a riverside congested with buildings and shipping on both sides. The river recedes to the center right; at the far distance is the billowing smoke of a steam tug and the dome of a distant church. In the foreground are low barges with figures standing or working. Along the lefthand bank are warehouses and other buildings, many with signs indicating that the proprietor makes sails, rope, and other naval implements.

This plate shows a view of docks, businesses that serve shipping, and numerous ships, some pulled up in dry dock. In the foreground a low boat (a barge or lighter) angles into the space, on which a man in a cap is seated, hands on his knees, looking at the viewer.

The curving bank of a river begins at the lower left of the image and sweeps around towards the left. Hugging the water's edge are many wooden buildings of two to five stories in height. At the far left, in the distance, are numerous two- and three-masted ships at anchor. The water at the lower left is open and quiet; a few small boats can be seen; the sky indicates that it is an overcast day.

Four spare industrial structures rise at different angles into an empty landscape. On the viewer's right, a scaffolding rises from the lower corner and angles to the left. On the left, another scaffold structure runs from the bottom corner along the left edge. In the middle, a building-like structure rises from the bottom of the composition and leans into the visual space, resting on a long rectangular solid that is draped with a cloth.
